Littleton Vets Ladies…unbeaten!
On a sunny but very windy Tuesday evening the Ladies’ Vets team consisting of Vivienne and Jane and Erika and Wendy chalked up another 3-1 win over Alverstoke. This is the 4th win in a row – only four more wins to go before we top the League!
Well done everybody.

Mens A team edged in titanic struggle on South Coast
The unbeaten mens’ A team were edged 5-4 in a titanic struggle in a top of the table clash against similarly unbeaten East Dorset. There was nothing to choose between East Dorset’s top two pairings and Littleton’s top two pairings (Adam Drysdale/Trevor Waughman and Richard Hancock/Wayne Barter with all rubbers between the two sides top two pairings being split equally 1 set each and finishing 1 rubber apiece (with East Dorset’s No 1 pairing edging both Littleton’s 1 and 2 pairings in the deciding tie breaks but with Littleton’s No 1 and No 2 pairings both coming out on top in the deciding tie breaks against East Dorset’s No 2 pairing). The match, as is often the case in tight HIOW league matches, was decided by the outcome of the No 3 rubber where Littleton’s No 3 pairing Scott Tuffield/Tom Neale (who after nearly producing the shock of the afternoon by wining the rubber against East Dorset’s No 2 pairing just being edged in the deciding tie breaker, which would have secured the match for Littleton) unfortunately lost to East Dorset’s No 3 pairing in the last round.
Captain Richard Hancock was quoted “It was a long day and a fantastic tussle in difficult windy conditions and for us on an unfamiliar grass surface. At the end of the day the match could have not been closer with a fairly even games tally and 9 sets apiece. The match was eventually decided on the basis of 5 tie breaks where they won 3 of them to secure the win. With two teams going up to Div 3, I feel that we are still well positioned for promotion, provided that we can beat Totton in our last match of the season at the end of the month”.

Third win for Mens A team
The mens A team win their third match of the season against Wellow as a result of stand in captain Scott Tuffield’s astute pairings. Both teams were under strength over half term but the Mens’ A team got off to a perfect start when Wellow gifted Littleton’s No 3 pairing (Tom Neale and Richard Peters) the rubber by fielding an ineligible player. The Mens’ A team still needed to beat Wellow at either No 1 or No 2 to secure the match. In the end after hard fought matches Littleton’s second string (Scott Tuffield and Mark Hinxman) won at No 2 and Littleton’s first pairing (Adam Drysdale and Phil Torkington) rounded of an impressive team perfoemance by winning at No1.
All other rubbers went according regulation giving Littleton an impressive 6-3 win. With 3 wins out of 3 so far this season the Mens A team now go into the championship decided against unbeaten East Dorset on Sat 14 June. Captain Richard Hancock was quoted:
“I think Scottie made the right selection calls for the Wellow match. We now have a good chance of beating East Dorset and gaining promotion.”

‘A’ team have convincing win v Swanmore ‘B’
Having narrowly lost by 3 – 5 to Warsash ‘B’ – where most of the rubbers went to three sets – the ‘A’ team at last fielded its strongest side, so far, in division one of the Apsley League on Saturday June 8th at Swanmore ‘B’.
Littleton’s mixed pairings were: Wayne Barter & Vivienne Aspin; Geoff Morris & Nikki Littler; Adam Drysdale & Erika Walsh; Phil Torkington & Anne Heathorn.
Adam & Erika and Phil & Anne didn’t hang about in winning their matches whereas the other two pairs . . . did! Especially Geoff & Nikki, who won in three sets.
At the halfway stage the team were 3 – 1 ahead. That first win was looking tantalisingly close. Anne & Erika made certain of at least a draw with a comfortable win. The men then powered through to put the team 6 – 1 up. Vivienne & Nikki then rounded off the day with a 3 set win and victory by 7 – 1. The season has just started.

Apsley Mixed B team
Littleton 2 Glebians 6 played at Littleton on 6 June 2008
On a glorious sunny afternoon Littleton was full of confidence that they would record their first win of the season, but it was not to be. Glebians proved too strong, although we did take them to 3 three setters. The mixed pair Gill and David and level pair Scott and David came close in their three set rubbers, whilst Jane and Gill won theirs (3-6, 6-1, 6-0). Littleton was conceded a rubber as the opposition’s second lady was late arriving.
As the season progresses the 3 juniors playing will prove the captain’s confidence in them, and the team will settle and start to record some victories.
Team: Rob Strickland, Scott Tuffield, Tom Neale, David Darby, Jane Hendry, Charlotte Littler, Sue Brown and Gill Baker.
