Another win for Littleton Vets Ladies

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 8:15 am

It’s a long way to drive to Milford-on-Sea but winning makes the effort worthwhile. On a perfect evening, no rain, a perfect team won 3 – 1.

Thank you Vivienne, Sue Brown and Jane Bone.

The Warsash Crash

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 9:54 pm

Warsash D 6 Littleton C 2 (24 May 08)

The C team’s unbeaten Apsley League run came to an abrupt end in the wind at Warsash.  A much changed team could (should?) have won the match but unfortunately failed to capitalise on winning opportunities (Littleton won the first set in four of the matches they lost!).  Bright spot of the day was the continuing good form of junior, David Darby, who, paired with Cynthia Mariner won his mixed match 6-3, 6-2 and his mens’ match, with Chris Stone, 6-0, 6-0.

Team: Chris Stone, David Darby, Jonathan Edgington, Andy Thomsen, Sue Brown, Cynthia Mariner, Sarah Impey, Jane Bracey.

Mens B team – 17th May – nice weather!

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 12:18 pm

The Men’s B home match of the 17th May against Downton was uninterrupted by any rain. That was not the reason we lost 6:3 again however! This time it was that their 1st pair was awesome and A+ team standard.
In the six sets that Downton’s 1st pair played they only lost 7 games, and four of those were against Sam and I !
Out of the 3 matches that we did win it was Ian and Geoff that won most convincingly (6:1, 6:2).
I think that they have stolen the 1st pair position in the next match.
Josh and David had a wobbly patch against their second pair at the start of their match but pulled it all back by winning the tie break. Nicely done.
Next match is against Winchester C on the 14th June.
Keep practising!

Littleton Mens A team secure second win of the season

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 7:32 am

The mens A team secured its second win of the season when bottom of the table Avondale B team pulled out of the match on Saturday because it could not raise a team.

This puts us in a good position to challenge the two other top teams in the league namely Totton & Eling and East Dorset with some of the clubs stronger players becoming available again and/or returning from injury.

But first we need to get past Wellow in our next match at home on Saturday 31 without captain Richard Hancock who has to travel away at short notice.

Littleton 6 Victoria Avenue 3, played at Victoria Avenue on 18 May 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 7:58 pm

The Ladies team travelled away to Bournemouth for this week’s Hants & IoW league match.  What a long way to go for an afternoon’s tennis!  We thought about diverting to the beach for the afternoon, but in the end decided to stay committed to the task in hand.

We knew we had a battle on our hands as our last outing to Victoria Avenue had ended with a tired and beaten team heading homewards.  This match, like our first this season, had 3 critical tie-breaks, all of which were won by Littleton.  Only two players from our first match were playing this week, so congratulations go to Anne Heathorn, Erika Walsh, Emma Poffley, Jane Hendry, Viv Aspin and Charlotte Littler.  After the first round Littleton were 2 – 1 up, then after the second round we were 4 – 2 up, so we just needed one more rubber to clinch the victory.  In the third round we took 2 more rubbers, making the final score 6 – 3 to Littleton.  An excellent win!

Littleton ‘C’ 7 Totton ‘B’ 1 (10 May 2008)

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 7:26 pm

It was rotten for Totton as the ‘C’ Team’s good start to the Aspley League season continued.  Shrewd tactical pairings by team captain, Jill Spiers, saw Littleton go 4-0 up after the mixed matches and then cruise home for a comfortable 7-1 win.  Junior member David Darby and Ros Nell played particularly well in their mixed match and the “never beaten in the Aspley League” pairing of Ian Dunn and Jonathan Edgington were in awesome form, winning their mens match 6-0, 6-0. Felicity McElderry was also in top form, winning two marathon 3 setters in the mixed and the ladies.

A JE match report. (Do I get paid for this?)

Team: Richard Hancock, David Darby, Ian Dunn, Jonathan Edgington, Jill Spiers, Felicity McElderry, Jane Bracey, Ros Neil.

Successful Fund Raising Tournament held at Littleton Tennis Club

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — littletontennis @ 11:10 am

On Tuesday 22nd April, the Winchester Muscular Dystrophy Group held a very successful tennis tournament which was organised by two Littleton Tennis Club members, Joanna Morgan and Ruth Mason. They were lucky enough to have the only sunny day during a very wet week! This Fun Tournament was supported by 48 players and was thoroughly enjoyed by all – and, after the morning’s play, the fun competitors then enjoyed a delicious cold lunch prepared by the MD committee.

The Muscular Dystrophy Group was delighted to raise over £760 which will be sent to the Head Office to help with research towards a cure for this debilitating childhood disease, and the MD charity is very grateful to Littleton Tennis Club for donating the use of their courts and for providing the tournament tennis balls. In fact, this successful tournament has been run for the past 8 years, thanks to the generosity of Littleton Tennis Club.

May Day Fun Tournament

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 9:48 pm

Beryl and Rob - the Winners!Claire and Chris - Runners Up

A typical start to a bank holiday monday – rain. This left Geoff facing a massive fruit diet for a few days (and possibly many visits to the smallest room in the house!) as the fruit was to be the prizes in the tournament. Luckily, for all concerned, the weather improved and play began around 2pm.

Having been sweet talked into, sorry, having generously volunteered (at the AGM) to run a tournament, Geoff settled for a random draw for partners for the first round followed thereafter by a winning man/ losing lady & winning lady/losing man theme. No handicaps but with a sudden death point at deuce whereby the ‘receiving pair’ could nominate both the server & receiver of that point. Designed to take the advantage of the server away, it certainly worked on many occasions. Each round was over 7 games. Ably assisted by Vivienne, instant prizes (bananas, oranges) were awarded after each round for a variety of shots, mis-hits, and actions like, how did he miss that? etc. etc.

In all 16 people took part – 8 men and 7 women. Well done to the mathematicians for spotting the error. At this point Geoff had to join the proceedings as ‘Georgina’.

It was good to see the younger element of the club taking part in the shape of Tim & Claire Harris & Chris Pott.

Seven rounds were played – with some die-hards wanting more – followed by an excellent tea in the pavilion.

Beryl May & Rob Harris were the winners with Chris Stone & Claire Harris close runners up. Although ‘Georgina’ had as many points as Beryl they didn’t count. However, a promise of a trip to the cinema, a bottle of pop and some smoky bacon crisps is not a bad compensation!

Pleasing start for Mens B – Sat 3rd May

Filed under: Uncategorized — littletontennis @ 9:35 pm

On the face of it the result: ‘Lost 6-3′ does not look great for this first match against Wyvern, away but the fact that we were only two tie breaks away from winning brings home the fact that this WAS a close match. I think it is a great start..and particularly so for David Darby and Josh Peppiatt as they performed more efficiently than the first pair for those matches that they won.

It has to be said that Chris Stone and Rob Strickland as the first pair played 13 games more that the third pair to achieve the same result, and felt every one of them too, but did manage to make Wyvern’s first pair work for their win by winning 10 games before losing the set !

The second pair; Ian Dunn and Jon Edgington kept the B team’s volume up to standard and showed true Brit grit in winning their tie break..inspired!

The next match is on May 17th . It is a home match against Downton.
